The SDS lab is proud to promote neurodiversity and healthy development in our community. See below our various projects combining research and community outreach.

Recent Events

In February, the Sleep and Developmental Studies Laboratory hosted a booth at the STEP in2 STEM event for families in the greater Lafayette community.

Infographics

Every semester, students in the SDS lab participate in science communication through creating evidence-based infographics. See example infographics that highlight findings from recent scholarly articles. Congratulations to Erin Custod, who’s sleep health infographic won 2nd place at the Sleep research Society competition!

Informing Policy- School Start Times in Indiana

As children become teens, there is a common trend in biological sleep rhythm- they are likely to go to bed later at night and wake up later in the morning. This is a natural circadian shift common in teens, however there is evidence that early school start times hinder teen’s ability to get a full night sleep. As part of an undergraduate internship, Amy Janis, Dr. Schwichtenberg, and a team of students created a policy brief, and are collecting school start times for every school in Indiana. This project hopes to see if the state meets recommendations of starting high schools no earlier than 8:30 am. See below to learn more about school start times and sleep.
