Sleep, breathing, and cerebrospinal fluid – Building toward a novel treatment for Alzheimer’s disease

R21 CSF Study Overview

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) helps clear harmful waste from the brain. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD) the buildup of waste in the brain is part of the disease. We are doing this research to understand the connection between CSF movement, sleep, and breathing to aid in designing interventions to improve CSF movement and potentially waste removal in the brain. For this study adults ages 30-55 years (with no MRI contradictions) may participate in (1) a sleep monitoring week, (2) an evening/sleep MRI/EEG multi-sensor scan that will last 2-4 hours, and (3) one daytime MRI scan that will last less than 1 hour. Compensation is up to $150. This will include $50 for returning the sleep monitoring materials, $50 for each MRI visit, and a memento image of your brain. The MRI scans and data from this study are not for diagnostic purposes.
