Lab Expectations

The Garrison Sleep Equity Lab is looking for students seeking to gain experience working with both quantitative and qualitative data in human subjects research. No prior research experience is required. To get a better sense of our lab, we have outlined some lab expectations.

What to expect from us

  • You can expect us to accommodate our students’ needs with competing academic deadlines, travel, family responsibilities, etc.
  • You can expect us to cultivate a diverse, welcoming research environment.
  • You can expect us to show you all the ins and outs about sleep science, sleep technology, and psychophysiological measures (even if you have no prior experience).
  • You can expect us to meet with students weekly during the academic semester to provide guidance and any additional support.
  • You can expect us to be approachable, and give you clear guidelines on assignments
  • You can expect us to provide feedback on projects in a timely manner
  • You can expect us to help you network, and help you pursue work that interests you
  • You can expect us to encourage you to present your work in poster presentations sessions/symposiums.
  • You can expect us to help you find resources when you need additional support
  • You can expect us to mentor you to succeed.

What we expect from you

  • We expect you to treat all members with respect by listening, keeping an open mind, and encouraging lab members during collaboration.
  • We expect you to have a genuine interest in sleep science and/or video games.
  • We expect you to respect our time. If something arises; we understand. Life Happens! Please let us know.
  • We expect you to comply with research ethics and confidentiality protocols.
  • We expect you to come to lab prepared and ready to remain on-task, engaged and show effort in the projects you work on.
  • We expect you to be supportive of your fellow lab members, and help us welcome new members.
  • We expect you to reach out to us if you you have any concerns. It’s okay to say no additional responsibilities on a project, if you are juggling several things.
  • We expect you to take time to attend social events and outreach events.
  • We expect you to use your judgement, and ask for clarity when something doesn’t make sense.
