Nursing Center for Education and Simulation

The Center for Nursing Education and Simulation (CNES), located in Johnson Hall on the West Lafayette campus, supports the School of Nursing and its faculty in the teaching-learning process.

The CNES is designed to provide realistic clinical settings to allow the student opportunities to practice clinical decision making, communication with patients and families, delegation to other healthcare providers and skill acquisition. Providing opportunities for students to learn “hands-on” patient encounters and skills in a safe, non-threatening environment is the goal of Purdue’s CNES.

The CNES houses multiple high-fidelity simulators, including three Laerdal Sim Man simulators, an infant Laerdal Sim Baby, a METi Pedia-Sim and a Gaumard maternity simulator Noelle S 575 with an interactive newborn HAL. These simulators, most of which have voices, heart, lung and bowel sounds, pulses and programmable vital signs, immerse the students in realistic clinical situations. Video-recording capabilities allow students and faculty to critique these simulations during the simulation debriefing.

An Immersion Medical Virtual IV is available for students to practice IV insertion simulation scenarios using computerized software. With over 150 scenarios, this software provides the user with immediate feedback on the chosen insertion site, venipuncture technique, type of equipment used, and disposal of equipment.

Static mannequins are also available in the CNES for students to practice and validate various nursing skills. Practice experiences in the CNES helps the students gain skill proficiency and confidence before entering the actual clinical environments.

Hours of Operation

The CNES is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.
