Descriptions and Criteria
Scholarships for All Health Sciences Students
Paul L. Ziemer Scholarship for Outstanding Freshman Scholastic Performance ($1,500)
The Paul L Ziemer Scholarship for Outstanding Freshman Scholastic Performance recognizes a freshman who demonstrates superior scholastic achievement and an interest in research in all areas of School of Health Sciences’ programs. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0;
- The student must be a freshman (semesters 1 and 2); and
- Preference for selection, in the following order, will be given to: students who are children of Advanced Technologies and Laboratories International, Inc. employees, and students who enhance the racial, ethnic and/or gender diversity among the undergraduates in the School.
Richard Vetter Scholarship in Health Sciences ($3,000)
The Richard Vetter Scholarship recognizes a student who demonstrates superior scholastic achievement and leadership ability in all areas of School of Health Sciences’ programs. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- The student must have at least one semester of enrollment remaining (semesters 1-7);
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0; and
- Leadership.
Distinguished Health Sciences Student Award ($1,000)
The Distinguished Health Sciences Student Award is presented annually to an outstanding senior in Health Sciences, who is not majoring in medical technology, on the basis of scholarship, professional attitude, and service. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this award are:
- Overall GPA of at least 3.3; and
- The student must be scheduled to graduate in May of the semester that the award is presented or by the end of the following fall semester (semester 8).
Undergraduate Service Award ($1,000)
The Undergraduate Service Award is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions in support of student activities. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this award are:
- The student must be a junior or a senior (semesters 5-8);
- Assistance to staff/faculty in academic/professional activities;
- Attitude toward serving; and
- Activities in professional organizations within the School of Health Sciences.
Scholarships with Preference for Radiological Health Sciences Majors
Tim and Sonya Kirkham Undergraduate Scholarship for Health Sciences ($1,500)
The Tim and Sonya Kirkham Scholarship recognizes an undergraduate student in Health Sciences with preference, but not limited to, students majoring in Radiological Health Sciences Health Physics Concentration. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- The scholarship is renewable provided the recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements and selection criteria. Re-application each year is necessary;
- Academic performance, scholarly accomplishment and/or service engagement related to health physics, radiological health, and health sciences;
- Have at least one semester of enrollment remaining.
Tom Widner Scholarship in Health Sciences ($2,000)
The Tom Widner Scholarship in Health Science recognizes a rising senior with preference, but not limited to, students majoring in Radiological Health. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- Financial need determined by the University’s division of financial aid – the student needs to file a FAFSA before submitting the award application;
- The student must be a rising senior and have at least one semester of enrollment remaining (semesters 6 and 7) and
- Leadership.
Scholarships Available Only to Radiological Health Sciences Majors
The Merit Scholarship in Radiological Health Sciences ($5,000)
The Merit Scholarship award recognizes a freshman or sophomore student who demonstrates superior scholastic achievements in the radiological health sciences program. The Scholarship was established by Dr. Craig Yoder. It encourages undergraduate students in their early years of education to seek a degree in the radiological health sciences. The Award is a merit-based annual award, but can be renewed if the awardees remain in good standing (re-application each year is necessary). The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- The student must be a freshman or sophomore (semesters 1-4);
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0; and
- Major (or with a concentration) in radiological health sciences.
Robert R. Landolt Radiological Health Scholarship ($1,000)
The Robert R. Landolt Radiological Health Scholarship recognizes a student who demonstrates superior scholastic achievement in the Radiological Health Sciences program. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0;
- The student must be a junior or senior and have at least one semester of enrollment remaining (semesters 5-7); and
- Preference given to members of the Purdue Health Physics Society.
Eli Lilly and Company Health Physics Scholarship ($1,000)
The Eli Lilly and Company Health Physics Scholarship recognizes an undergraduate student majoring in Radiological Health Science or a student who is pursuing a double major in Radiological and Occupational Health Science, who plans to pursue a career in Health Physics. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- Overall GPA;
- Other evidence of scholarship and academic performance;
- Participation in the Purdue Health Physics Society and other evidence of professional interest and activity.
- Have at least one semester remaining.
Scholarships Available Only to Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences Majors
Jeff Kizer Award ($4,000)
The Jeff Kizer Award recognizes a student who demonstrates superior scholastic and professional achievement, leadership ability, and ethical conduct majoring in the Occupational and Environmental Health Science program. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this award are:
- Overall GPA;
- Majoring in the Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences program;
- Enrolled in the last 2 years of the program (semesters 5-7).
Eli Lilly and Company Industrial Hygiene Scholarship ($1,000)
The Eli Lilly and Company Award in Industrial Hygiene is given annually to an undergraduate student majoring in Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences, who plans to pursue a career in Industrial Hygiene. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- Overall GPA;
- Other evidence of scholarship and academic performance; and
- Evidence of professional interest and activity.
- Have at least one semester remaining.
T&M Associates Foundation Scholarship ($5000)
The T&M Associates Foundation Scholarship is given annually to an undergraduate student majoring in Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
1. Overall GPA;
2. Evidence of professional interest and activity;
3. Have at least one semester remaining.
Scholarships Available Only to Medical Laboratory Sciences Majors
Barbara Young Award ($3,000)
The Barbara Young Award recognizes an outstanding junior enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Science program.
The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this award are:
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0;
- Acceptance into an accredited clinical program at an affiliated hospital; and
- Leadership, self-reliance, and outstanding motivation.
Bootsma Distinguished Medical Laboratory Science Scholarship (3 awards of $1,500 each)
The Bootsma Distinguished Medical Laboratory Science Scholarship recognizes a student in junior or senior year (must have at least one semester of enrollment remaining) exhibiting outstanding characteristics and performance in medical laboratory science. The eligibility requirements and selection criteria for this scholarship are:
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0;
- Strong interest and keen enthusiasm in pursuing career in Medical Technology;
- Distinguished academic achievements and personal professional growth; and
Promise of future professional development.
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Scholarship
Scholarship applications may be submitted by students who are enrolled in the radiological health sciences program in the School of Health Sciences who have at least one semester left in the program. The scholarship provides $5,000 per semester for spring and fall semesters and a one-time stipend of $1,600 to attend a professional meeting or conference. The scholarship will be awarded on a semester basis for up to four semesters, and renewal is contingent upon continued full-time status, satisfactory academic progress and a cumulative GPA above 3.0. Scholarship Benefits:
- Tuition coverage of $5,000 per semester
- Stipend for meeting or conference attendance in the amount of $1,600
- Recommendation to summer internships in related fields
Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:
- U.S. citizens or lawful U.S. permanent residents
- Enrollment in the radiological health sciences undergraduate program
- Be classified as a full-time student
- Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Willing to commit to working six months in the nuclear industry for every year or partial year of support on the NRC Fellowship. The “nuclear industry” is defined as the NRC, other federal agencies, state agencies, Department of Energy laboratories, nuclear-related industry, or academia in the recipients’ sponsored fields of study.
