Graduate Student Awards
C. Eugene Walker Outstanding Graduate Student Award
The C. Eugene Walker Outstanding Graduate Student Award is an endowment provided by Dr. C. Eugene Walker who received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Purdue University in January of 1965. Graduate students who receive this award have their names placed on the C. Eugene Walker Award plaque in the Peirce Hall lounge, receive an individual framed certificate, and receive up to $1,000 in the form of reimbursement for the expenses (travel, lodging, food, etc.) of traveling to present one or more research papers at one or more national or regional conferences.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the award, a student must be either:
- a primary author of one or more posters or papers already accepted for presentation at a meeting (or meetings) that will be held during the remainder of the award year, or
- a primary author of one or more posters or papers presented since the last Walker Award nomination process, and for which notification of acceptance was not yet available.
Review Process:
The Graduate Committee reviews applicants for the award, placing greatest emphasis on the applicants’ accomplishments in research and scholarship. Applications for the award should include:
- a copy of the material submitted to the conference,
- a copy of the notification of acceptance of the papers,
- a current curriculum vitae,
- a one-page (no longer) nomination statement from the student’s faculty advisor. (In particular, the nomination statement should place the research to be presented in the context of the student and/or advisor’s previous work).
Application Deadline:
Applications are submitted annually in March. An announcement will be advertised to all graduate students each year providing a specific due date for submissions.
Graduate Research Publication Award
This award is to recognize excellence in graduate student research and is awarded to two students per year. Submitted papers must appear in a refereed journal, either published in the preceding calendar year or currently in press. A paper may only be submitted for award consideration one time.
- Prize: $500, name engraved on plaque displayed in the department, and a framed certificate.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Current graduate student in good standing in the department.
- Student must be sole or first author of the paper.
- If other graduate students in the department co-author the paper, each will be recognized with the award.
- Faculty can be co-author(s) on the paper, but cannot be first author.
Review Process:
Papers will be evaluated by members of the Graduate Committee, who represent all areas of the department. Committee members will not participate in the evaluation of any papers submitted by their own students. Papers will be judged on magnitude of contribution to the psychological sciences and on expository style. Applications for the award should include:
- The paper (if in-press, also include copies of the acceptance letter)
- A brief statement (maximum 1 page) from the student’s major professor in support of the award

John & Joyce Schaeuble Award for Quantitative Approaches to Psychological Sciences
The John and Joyce Schaeuble Award for Quantitative Approaches to Psychological Science is an endowment provided by John and Joyce Schaeuble to recognize excellence in teaching, mentoring and/or research on statistical methodology, or excellence in the application of quantitative methods to research in an area of psychological sciences, as determined by the department. In the fall of each year, one awardee will be selected and receive $1,000 for their accomplishments in quantitative methods
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the award, the student must be nominated by a faculty member for their excellence in teaching, mentoring and/or research in statistical methodology.
Students are encouraged to ask a faculty member for this nomination.
Review Process:
The Graduate Committee reviews applicants for the award, placing greatest
emphasis on the applicants’ accomplishments in teaching, mentoring, and/or
research in statistical methodology. Applications for the award should include:
- faculty member nomination
- a current curriculum vitae
- evidence of success in statistical methodology in the form of transcripts, teaching evaluations, authorship on a manuscript or chapter, and/or relevant mentoring activities.
Application Deadline:
Applications and supporting documents are due December 1. All material
should be submitted to Nancy Obrien at nobrien@purdue.edu.
Awardee Responsibilities:
Should you be awarded the John and Joyce Schaeuble Award for Quantitative
Approaches to Psychological Sciences, you will communicate with the donors
regarding your accomplishments leading to the award.
David A. Santogrossi Graduate Instructor Award
This award recognizes excellence in teaching for students working as a graduate instructor (GI) in the department.
Prizes:
$500 and name engraved on plaque displayed permanently in the department.
Eligibility:
Current graduate student in good standing in the department with experience working as a GTA.
Review Process:
To be considered for this award, the student should arrange to have the following materials submitted to Nancy O’Brien, Graduate Program Coordinator:
- A letter of nomination from at least one of the professors for whom he or she has worked as a teaching assistant, along with a copy of the Performance Evaluation(s) completed by that/those faculty member(s). Letters and performance evaluations may be submitted from up to three faculty members in support of a nomination.
- A 1-page statement of teaching philosophy.
- A copy of the student’s CV.
Applications will be evaluated by members of the Awards subcommittee of the Graduate Committee. Committee members will not participate in the evaluation of applications submitted by their own students.
