Biography

Dr. Hennigar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University. His research centers on understanding iron requirements and developing effective strategies to prevent and treat iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in vulnerable populations. His laboratory uses controlled human studies, clinical trials, stable isotope techniques, population-based research, and complementary mechanistic approaches to understand how physiological and environmental factors, such as infection, inflammation, undernutrition, physical activity, and altitude, affect iron metabolism, absorption, and requirements. This work spans U.S. and international settings, with the goal of generating evidence to inform dietary guidelines and public health policies and translating that evidence into practical interventions to improve iron status and health.
