Biography

Dr. Ambike studies human locomotion and prehension across the adult age span. He is interested in how aging influences stability of movements, and how stability and maneuverability – two antagonistic movement attributes – are traded off in activities of daily living. Dr. Ambike studies these issues through the lens of synergistic control, which is a fundamental feature of biological movements wherein errors that arise naturally in some parts of the body are compensated by adjustments in other parts of the body engaged in the same action. Dr. Ambike characterizes synergistic control of prehensile movements and of locomotion while navigating environmental hazards. Measures devised by Dr. Ambike with this approach are proving to be sensitive and accurate biomarkers of locomotor issues in older individuals and in individuals with neuromuscular pathologies such as Parkinson’s Disease.
